At the time of the 2010 Census, Nowata had a population of 3,731 people (or 35.41% of the total population of Nowata County). This makes Nowata the county's most populous community.

The population of Nowata represents 0.1% of the total population of Oklahoma (which has 3,751,351 people), making it the state's 93rd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 3,731 people, the population of Nowata decreased 6.04% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 3,971 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Nowata was on a map titled Map of Oklahoma (from Rand McNally, 1911).
