At the time of the 2010 Census, Alva had a population of 4,945 people (or 55.7% of the total population of Woods County). This makes Alva the county's most populous community.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Alva was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Alva post office opened in 1893.
