Summit County was founded March 3, 1840. Summit was created by taking area from Medina, Portage and Stark Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Summit had a population of 540,814 people. This is a decrease of 0.18% since the last Census (which gave a population of 541,781 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Summit represented 4.7% of the total population of Ohio.
