Belmont County was founded September 7, 1801. Belmont was created by taking area from Jefferson and Washington Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Belmont had a population of 66,979 people. This is a decrease of 4.86% since the last Census (which gave a population of 70,400 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Belmont represented 0.61% of the total population of Ohio.
