Various Identification Codes

Given the problems created by spelling variations and other naming inconsistencies, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) was created to establish and maintain a uniform name for geographic features (eg- communities, cemeteries, mountains, lakes, etc). The resulting BGN names are kept in a database called the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which is maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

During an older effort, federal agencies worked together to create a set of codes that could be shared and this resulted in the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS Document 55-3). FIPS codes have been assigned to all counties and states. In addition, FIPS codes have been assigned to most (but not all) communities.

The State and County codes related to Syracuse:

      State Code: 36 (New York)

      County Code: 67 (Onondaga County)

Since the County FIPS code can be repeated in other States, it's necessary to combine the State and County FIPS codes to uniquely identify Onondaga County (ie- 36/67).

The FIPS Place code of '73000' has been assigned to Syracuse.

As with the County FIPS code, the Place FIPS code can be repeated in other States. It's necessary to combine the State and Place FIPS codes to uniquely identify Syracuse (ie- 36/73000).

For statistical purposes, the US Census Bureau has divided the country into four Regions. Syracuse is located in Region #1 (the Northeast Region).

In turn, the US Census Bureau has further divided each Region into Divisions. Syracuse is located in Division #2 (the Middle Atlantic Division).

The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has created ten Federal Regions: Syracuse is located in Region II (Region 2).
