Various Identification CodesDuring an older effort, federal agencies worked together to create a set of codes that could be shared and this resulted in the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS Document 55-3). FIPS codes have been assigned to all counties and states. In addition, FIPS codes have been assigned to most (but not all) communities.
