Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Alfred had an population of 3,928 people. This is a decrease of 5.89% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 0.66% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Alfred had a population of 4,174 people (which is 8.53% of the total population of Allegany County). This makes Alfred the county's 4th most populous community.

The population of Alfred represents 0.02% of the population of New York (which has 19,378,102 people), making it the state's 551st most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 4,174 people, the population of Alfred increased 5.56% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 3,954 people).
