The 2000 Census showed that Las Vegas had a population of 478,434 people<1>. This represents 23.71% of the total population of Nevada, making it the state's most populous community. Using the above population and land area values, Las Vegas had a 2000 population density of 4,222 people per square mile [1,630 people/km²], making it the mostly densely populated area in Nevada. Clark CountyThe city of Las Vegas is located in Clark County and is the county seat. The county had a population of 1,393,240 people at the 2000 Census. With it's population of 478,434 people, Las Vegas contained 34.34% of the Clark County total. In addition, where the community of Las Vegas has a population density of 4,222 people per square mile [1,630 people/km²], Clark County averages 176.1 people per square mile [68 people/km²].
