Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Elko had an population of 20,491 people. This is an increase of 11.99% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 22.64% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Elko had a population of 18,297 people (which is 37.48% of the total population of Elko County). This makes Elko the county's most populous community.

The population of Elko represents 0.68% of the population of Nevada (which has 2,700,551 people), making it the state's 8th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 18,297 people, the population of Elko increased 9.51% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 16,708 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Elko was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Elko post office opened in 1869.
