At the time of the 2010 Census, Socorro had a population of 9,051 people (which is 50.66% of the total population of Socorro County). This makes Socorro the county's most populous community.

The population of Socorro represents 0.44% of the total population of New Mexico (which has 2,059,179 people), making it the state's 22nd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 9,051 people, the population of Socorro increased 1.96% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 8,877 people).

We originally found mention of Socorro in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Socorro was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Socorro post office opened in 1851.

We also found Socorro in the book titled List of Post Offices in the United States (1870).
