The community of Clayton is the Seat for Union County.

Union County was founded in 1893. Union was created by taking area from Colfax, Mora and  Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Union had a population of 4,043 people. This is a decrease of 11.12% since the last Census (which gave a population of 4,549 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Union represented 0.22% of the total population of New Mexico.
