The city of Bayard is located in southwest New Mexico.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Bayard, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1902.

From the  Census Estimates for 2019, Bayard has a population of 2,113 people<3> (see below for details).

The community of Bayard is 5,820 feet [1,774 m] above sea level.<4> In other words, the elevation of Bayard is about 1¼ mile [or ~1¾ km] above sea level.

Time Zone: Bayard lies in the Mountain Time Zone (MST/MDT) and observes daylight saving time

Note: If you travel west from Bayard (for example, toward Duncan (AZ)), you will leave Mountain Time and cross into the Mountain Standard Time Zone (MST). In addition, you will be moving from an area that observes daylight saving time to one that does not.

Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Bayard had an population of 2,113 people. This is a decrease of 9.24% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 16.61% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Bayard had a population of 2,328 people (or 7.89% of the total population of Grant County). This makes Bayard the county's 2nd most populous community.

The population of Bayard represents 0.11% of the total population of New Mexico (which has 2,059,179 people), making it the state's 44th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 2,328 people, the population of Bayard decreased 8.13% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 2,534 people).

We originally found mention of Bayard in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Bayard was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Bayard post office opened in 1902.

We also found Bayard on a map titled Rand McNally Map of New Mexico (1925).
