At the time of the 2010 Census, Newark had a population of 277,140 people (which is 35.35% of the total population of Essex County). This makes Newark the county's most populous community.

The population of Newark represents 3.15% of the population of New Jersey (which has 8,791,894 people), making it the state's most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 277,140 people, the population of Newark increased 1.31% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 273,546 people).
