Belknap County was founded in 1840. Belknap was created by taking area from Merrimack and Strafford Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Belknap had a population of 61,398 people. This is an increase of 2.18% since the last Census (which gave a population of 60,088 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Belknap represented 4.56% of the total population of New Hampshire.
