At the time of the 2010 Census, Alton had a population of 5,250 people (which is 8.74% of the total population of Belknap County). This makes Alton the county's 5th most populous community.

We originally found mention of Alton in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Alton was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<8>

From that list, the Alton post office opened in 1818.

We also found Alton in the book titled U.S. Post Offices (Oct. 1846).
