While we don't have a date for the founding of O'Neill, you might get a feel for it by knowing that during our research the earliest mention that we found (so far) was on a map dated 1895.

From the  Census Estimates for 2019, O'Neill has a population of 3,585 people<2> (see below for details).

Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, O'Neill had an population of 3,585 people. This is a decrease of 3.24% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 3.96% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, O'Neill had a population of 3,705 people (which is 35.51% of the total population of Holt County). This makes O'Neill the county's most populous community.

The population of O'Neill represents 0.2% of the total population of Nebraska (which has 1,826,341 people), making it the state's 39th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 3,705 people, the population of O'Neill has remained roughly the same as the 2000 Census (with a count of 3,733 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for O'Neill was on a map titled Map of Nebraska (from Rand McNally, 1895).
