At the time of the 2010 Census, Gering had a population of 8,500 people (or 22.99% of the total population of Scotts Bluff County). This makes Gering the county's 2nd most populous community.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Gering was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Gering post office opened in 1887.
