While we don't have a date for the founding of Elwood, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1885.

From the  Census Estimates for 2019, Elwood has a population of 679 people<3> (see below for details).

Elwood is 2,670 feet [814 m] above sea level.<4> In other words, the altitude of Elwood is ½ mile above sea level.

Time Zone: Elwood lies in the Central Time Zone (CST/CDT) and observes daylight saving time

Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Elwood had an population of 679 people. This is a decrease of 3.96% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 10.78% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Elwood had a population of 707 people (which is 34.59% of the total population of Gosper County). This makes Elwood the county's most populous community.

The population of Elwood represents 0.04% of the population of Nebraska (which has 1,826,341 people), making it the state's 159th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 707 people, the population of Elwood decreased 7.1% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 761 people).

We originally found mention of Elwood in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Elwood was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Elwood post office opened in 1885.

We also found Elwood on a map titled Rand McNally Map of Nebraska (1895).
