The community of Central City is the Seat for Merrick County.

Merrick County was founded in 1858 and was created by taking area from Polk County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Merrick had a population of 7,818 people. This is a decrease of 0.34% since the last Census (which gave a population of 7,845 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Merrick represented 0.43% of the total population of Nebraska.
