Kimball County was founded in 1888 and was created by taking area from Cheyenne County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Kimball had a population of 3,597 people. This is a decrease of 5.86% since the last Census (which gave a population of 3,821 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Kimball represented 0.21% of the total population of Nebraska.
