The population of Brainard represents 0.02% of the total population of Nebraska (which has 1,826,341 people), making it the state's 254th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 330 people, the population of Brainard decreased 5.98% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 351 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Brainard was on a map titled Map of Nebraska (from Rand McNally, 1895).

We also found Brainard mentioned on a train schedule titled Union Pacific Railroad Time Tables (September 1924).
