At the time of the 2010 Census, Elgin had a population of 642 people (which is 26.82% of the total population of Grant County). This makes Elgin the county's most populous community.

The population of Elgin represents 0.1% of the population of North Dakota (which has 672,591 people), making it the state's 102nd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 642 people, the population of Elgin decreased 2.58% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 659 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Elgin was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Elgin post office opened in 1910.
