At the time of the 2010 Census, Sparta had a population of 1,770 people (or 15.87% of the total population of Alleghany County). This makes Sparta the county's most populous community.

The population of Sparta represents 0.02% of the total population of North Carolina (which has 9,535,483 people), making it the state's 262nd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 1,770 people, the population of Sparta decreased 2.59% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 1,817 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Sparta was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Sparta post office opened in 1879.

We also found Sparta in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).
