Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Monroe had an population of 35,506 people. This is an increase of 8.26% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 35.37% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Monroe had a population of 32,797 people (which is 16.29% of the total population of Union County). This makes Monroe the county's 2nd most populous community.

The population of Monroe represents 0.34% of the total population of North Carolina (which has 9,535,483 people), making it the state's 26th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 32,797 people, the population of Monroe increased 25.05% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 26,228 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Monroe was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Monroe post office opened in 1844.
