At the time of the 2010 Census, Matthews had a population of 27,198 people. This makes Matthews the county's 3rd most populous community.

The population of Matthews represents 0.29% of the population of North Carolina (which has 9,535,483 people), making it the state's 32nd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 27,198 people, the population of Matthews increased 22.92% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 22,127 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Matthews was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<8>

From that list, the Matthews post office opened in 1875.
