At the time of the 2010 Census, Kinston had a population of 21,677 people (or 36.43% of the total population of Lenoir County). This makes Kinston the county's most populous community.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Kinston was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Kinston post office opened in 1794.
