Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Gastonia had an population of 77,347 people. This is an increase of 7.81% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 16.7% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Gastonia had a population of 71,741 people (which is 34.81% of the total population of Gaston County). This makes Gastonia the county's most populous community.

The population of Gastonia represents 0.75% of the total population of North Carolina (which has 9,535,483 people), making it the state's 13th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 71,741 people, the population of Gastonia increased 8.24% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 66,277 people).
