Welcome to Plains ...

The town of Plains is located in Sanders County<1> (at the time of its founding, Plains was located in Missoula County).


The location of Plains has been provided by the Geographic Names Information System (ie- the GNIS).<2>


While we don't have a date for the founding of Plains, you might get a feel for it by knowing that during our research the earliest mention that we found (so far) was in a book dated 1895.

From the  Census Estimates for 2019, Plains has a population of 1,120 people<3> (see below for details).

Plains is 2,470 feet [753 m] above sea level.<4> In other words, the altitude of Plains is about ½ mile above sea level.

Time Zone: Plains lies in the Mountain Time Zone (MST/MDT) and observes daylight saving time

Note: If you travel west from Plains (for example, toward Mullan (ID)), you will leave Mountain Time and cross into the Pacific Time Zone (PST/PDT).

Population Details ...

Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Plains had an population of 1,120 people. This is an increase of 6.87% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 0.53% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Plains had a population of 1,048 people (which is 9.18% of the total population of Sanders County). This makes Plains the county's 2nd most populous community.

The population of Plains represents 0.11% of the population of Montana (which has 989,415 people), making it the state's 51st most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 1,048 people, the population of Plains decreased 6.93% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 1,126 people).
