Prairie County was founded in 1915. Prairie was created by taking area from Dawson and Fallon Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Prairie had a population of 1,064 people. This is a decrease of 9.75% since the last Census (which gave a population of 1,179 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Prairie represented 0.12% of the total population of Montana.
