Chouteau County is one of the original counties of Montana and was founded in 1865.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Chouteau had a population of 5,681 people. This is a decrease of 2.27% since the last Census (which gave a population of 5,813 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Chouteau represented 0.59% of the total population of Montana.
