Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Chester had an population of 875 people. This is an increase of 3.31% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 0.46% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Chester had a population of 847 people (which is 36.21% of the total population of Liberty County). This makes Chester the county's most populous community.

The population of Chester represents 0.09% of the total population of Montana (which has 989,415 people), making it the state's 60th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 847 people, the population of Chester decreased 2.76% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 871 people).
