Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Big Sandy had an population of 567 people. This is a decrease of 5.18% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 19.35% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Big Sandy had a population of 598 people (which is 10.29% of the total population of Chouteau County). This makes Big Sandy the county's 2nd most populous community.

The population of Big Sandy represents 0.06% of the total population of Montana (which has 989,415 people), making it the state's 77th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 598 people, the population of Big Sandy decreased 14.94% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 703 people).
