At the time of the 2010 Census, Jackson had a population of 173,514 people (or 70.74% of the total population of Hinds County). This makes Jackson the county's most populous community.

The population of Jackson represents 5.85% of the population of Mississippi (which has 2,967,297 people), making it the state's most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 173,514 people, the population of Jackson decreased 5.83% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 184,256 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Jackson was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<8>

From that list, the Jackson post office opened in 1817.
