Smith County was founded in 1833. Smith was created by taking area from Covington, Jones and Rankin Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Smith had a population of 15,840 people. This is a decrease of 3.95% since the last Census (which gave a population of 16,491 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Smith represented 0.56% of the total population of Mississippi.
