Sharkey County was founded in 1876. Sharkey was created by taking area from Issaquena, Warren and Washington Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Sharkey had a population of 4,312 people. This is a decrease of 12.29% since the last Census (which gave a population of 4,916 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Sharkey represented 0.17% of the total population of Mississippi.
