Prentiss County was founded in 1870. Prentiss was created by taking area from Itawamba and Tishomingo Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Prentiss had a population of 25,074 people. This is a decrease of 0.8% since the last Census (which gave a population of 25,276 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Prentiss represented 0.85% of the total population of Mississippi.
