Attala County was founded in 1833 and was created by taking area from Madison County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Attala had a population of 18,173 people. This is a decrease of 7.11% since the last Census (which gave a population of 19,564 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Attala represented 0.66% of the total population of Mississippi.
