Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Carthage had an population of 4,758 people. This is a decrease of 6.25% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 2.61% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Carthage had a population of 5,075 people (or 21.32% of the total population of Leake County). This makes Carthage the county's most populous community.

The population of Carthage represents 0.17% of the population of Mississippi (which has 2,967,297 people), making it the state's 61st most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 5,075 people, the population of Carthage increased 9.45% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 4,637 people).

We originally found mention of Carthage in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Carthage was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Carthage post office opened in 1837.

We also found Carthage in the book titled U.S. Post Offices (Oct. 1846).
