Newton County was founded in 1838 and was created by taking area from Barry County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Newton had a population of 58,329 people. This is an increase of 0.37% since the last Census (which gave a population of 58,114 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Newton represented 0.97% of the total population of Missouri.
