Macon County was founded in 1837. Macon was created by taking area from Chariton and Randolph Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Macon had a population of 15,111 people. This is a decrease of 2.92% since the last Census (which gave a population of 15,566 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Macon represented 0.26% of the total population of Missouri.
