Jefferson County was founded in 1818. Jefferson was created by taking area from Saint Louis and Sainte Genevieve Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Jefferson had a population of 225,402 people. This is an increase of 3.05% since the last Census (which gave a population of 218,733 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Jefferson represented 3.65% of the total population of Missouri.
