Murray County was founded in 1857 and was created by taking area from Brown County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Murray had a population of 8,197 people. This is a decrease of 6.05% since the last Census (which gave a population of 8,725 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Murray represented 0.16% of the total population of Minnesota.
