Houston County was founded in 1854 and was created by taking area from Fillmore County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Houston had a population of 18,667 people. This is a decrease of 1.89% since the last Census (which gave a population of 19,027 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Houston represented 0.36% of the total population of Minnesota.
