The community of Moorhead is the Seat for Clay County.

Clay County was founded in 1862 and was created by taking area from Pembina County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Clay had a population of 64,441 people. This is an increase of 9.22% since the last Census (which gave a population of 58,999 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Clay represented 1.11% of the total population of Minnesota.
