Carlton County was founded in 1857. Carlton was created by taking area from Pine and Saint Louis Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Carlton had a population of 35,913 people. This is an increase of 1.49% since the last Census (which gave a population of 35,386 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Carlton represented 0.67% of the total population of Minnesota.
