Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Ironwood had an population of 4,871 people. This is a decrease of 9.58% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 22.6% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Ironwood had a population of 5,387 people (or 32.79% of the total population of Gogebic County). This makes Ironwood the county's most populous community.

The population of Ironwood represents 0.05% of the total population of Michigan (which has 9,883,640 people), making it the state's 143rd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 5,387 people, the population of Ironwood decreased 14.4% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 6,293 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Ironwood was on a map titled Road Map for Michigan (from Shell Oil, 1956).

We also found Ironwood in the book titled .<7> From that list, the Ironwood post office opened in 1887.
