The community of Muskegon is the Seat for Muskegon County.

Muskegon County was founded February 4, 1859 and was created by taking area from Ottawa County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Muskegon had a population of 173,645 people. This is an increase of 0.85% since the last Census (which gave a population of 172,188 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Muskegon represented 1.74% of the total population of Michigan.
