At the time of the 2010 Census, Sanford had a population of 20,798 people (which is 10.55% of the total population of York County). This makes Sanford the county's 2nd most populous community.

The population of Sanford represents 1.57% of the total population of Maine (which has 1,328,361 people), making it the state's 7th most populous community.
