At the time of the 2010 Census, Elkton had a population of 15,443 people (which is 15.27% of the total population of Cecil County). This makes Elkton the county's most populous community.

The population of Elkton represents 0.27% of the population of Maryland (which has 5,773,552 people), making it the state's 17th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 15,443 people, the population of Elkton increased 29.85% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 11,893 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Elkton was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<8>

From that list, the Elkton post office opened in 1790.
