De Soto Parish was founded in 1843. De Soto was created by taking area from Caddo and Natchitoches Parishes.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> De Soto had a population of 27,440 people. This is an increase of 2.94% since the last Census (which gave a population of 26,656 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, De Soto represented 0.59% of the total population of Louisiana.
